Choosing Magnetic Stirring Bars

To prevent fluttering (intermittent rotation of the stirring bar) in the vessel, the lengths of driving magnet in the stirrer and stirring bar should be approximately the same. In addition, the distance between the driving magnet and the stirrer magnet should be possibly small.

The correct stirring bar shape is determined by the contour of the bottom of the vessel:
» For round bottom flasks: use egg shaped magnetic stirring bars
» For tall, slim vessels with flat bottoms: use cylindrical or star head magnetic stirring bars
» For large vessels with flat bottoms: use triangular or square magnetic stirring bars which will create strong mixing turbulence that will lift solid particles
» For mixing viscous liquids use power magnetic stirring bars and to avoid contracting the vessel bottom, use beakerliner.
